요약 : The dissertation seeks to refine current methods of intertextual comparison and analysis of biblical texts. The introduction acknowledges a vast range of approaches to biblical intertextuality, recognizing the absence of uniform guidelines. Individual studies apply inconsistent criteria in an effort to identify literary interrelationships between earlier and later biblical texts. The dissertation responds to the need for methodological clarification, setting forth a set of proposed criteria carefully selected after critical evaluation of contemporary approaches.

요약 : Furthermore, the absence of standard definitions for intertextual analysis in biblical studies requires elucidation of specific terminology. The dissertation proposes definitions for standard terms in the discipline. These definitions contribute to a clearer understanding of the function and purpose behind various types of literary interrelationships in the biblical corpus.

요약 : The dissertation employs a wide variety of sources in the initial chapters, relying primarily on articles and essays in the field of inner-biblical exegesis and allusion. While the study of the New Testament's use of the Old Testament provides many representative works, very little substantive research examines the literary interrelationships among Old Testament texts. Consequently, the literary relationships between the book of Isaiah and individual psalms remain largely unexplored. The dissertation, then, not only proposes a sound methodological approach to intertextual analysis in the Hebrew Bible, but the research applies that method to textual relationships previously unexamined.

요약 : Specifically, the dissertation applies the proposed criteria by comparing multiple texts from Isaiah with Psalms 96-99. The literary and theological analysis reveals that Isaiah borrowed frequently from this group of psalms. Isaiah employs a wide variety of literary techniques in his appropriation and transformation of earlier biblical texts. In many instances, Isaiah draws contextual elements and unique language from Psalms 96-99, reinterpreting those contexts in light of contemporary historical circumstances. Isaiah's allusions to Psalms 96-99 influence his prophecies, permeating his message with familiar, authoritative themes from Israel's past. The prophet skillfully advances his theological emphases, infusing new life into older texts, and demonstrating their relevance to the needs and concerns of his audience.
