요약 : The rite of confirmation and published confirmation addresses and sermons are the major sources for the theology of confirmation in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). Chapter one outlines the origins of an evangelical rite of confirmation through three sixteenth-century reformers, Martin Luther, Martin Bucer, and Martin Chemnitz, and discusses the influence of Pietism on the introduction of a public rite of confirmation within Lutheranism.

요약 : Chapters two through four consider the liturgical evidence and published addresses or sermons in the LCMS. After first comparing the LCMS rite of confirmation from 1856 with two other nineteenth-century rites, subsequent chapters trace revisions in the LCMS rite through the late twentieth century. For a century the pattern of confirmation was a public examination of the confirmands, a confirmation address by the pastor, followed immediately by the liturgical rite. Because of this unified ritual complex, there was strong continuity between the theology of the rite itself and that in the published addresses. Pastors defined confirmation most often in terms of the vow or promise of lifelong faithfulness to Christ. In relation to baptism, confirmation day was described as the time when the confirmand renewed and confirmed baptismal vows made on his or her behalf by sponsors at baptism.

요약 : In the latter half of the twentieth century two commissions were particularly influential: the Joint Commission on the Theology and Practice of Confirmation, and the Inter-Lutheran Commission of Worship that produced Lutheran Book of Worship. Both stressed the primacy of baptism in Lutheran theology and criticized current practices of confirmation for undermining Lutheran baptismal theology. Some confirmation sermons from this period reflect the revised theology of confirmation put forth by these commissions, but others retain the traditional LCMS views. A parallel breakdown of the unified ritual complex also enabled the sermons to express a broader range of theologies of confirmation. The study concludes by considering the current state, characterized by two opposing views of confirmation: the traditional one described above and still expressed in the rite and some preaching, and an alternative view found only in sermons, which re-frames its meaning in less stark terms, emphasizes the need for continued growth in faith, and stresses the faithfulness of God.
