요약 : The Naaman story has been curiously neglected throughout history both in Hebrew Bible and liturgical studies. Scholars have paid little attention to the event of Naaman's conversion through a water rite. In this study, the Naaman story is analyzed in relation to conversion and water rites. This dual focus contributes to an appreciation of conversion and water baptism in Christianity.

요약 : In this study, the importance of the Naaman story is demonstrated by literary analysis, historical investigation, and theological application. Through the literary analysis of the Naaman story, the importance of the water rite becomes evident. The first half of the story (vv. 1-14) moves towards the immersion while the last half (vv. 15-27) moves away from the water rite. Through the immersion, the haughty Naaman becomes a humble person; the ethnic chauvinist becomes a convert. After his conversion, Naaman calls himself a servant of Elisha. Thus, the story as a whole is the story of Naaman's conversion through a water rite.

요약 : As a water rite, the Naaman story has an important role in providing a background for Christian baptism. The Naaman story has many features which become important elements in Christian baptism. The internal evidence of the Naaman story confirms such importance: the process of conversion; immersion in the Jordan River; use of the word t&dotbelow;ābal/italic; comparison of his body to that of a new born child; and dealing with critical issues of life after conversion.

요약 : Naaman's two requests are closely related to his new life in YHWH: (1)two mules of Israelite soil and (2)advance pardon for his future assistance of his master in the Rimmon temple. Luke and John use the Naaman story for miracle stories and baptismal rites. Some Fathers of the Church use the Naaman story when they comment on Christian baptism. They identify the importance of the Naaman story for baptismal rites. Thus, early Christian tradition realized the importance of the Naaman story in relation to Christian baptism.

요약 : However, such importance has been neglected since the early stages of Church history. Scholars both in the Catholic Church and in the Protestant Church, as well as most contemporary liturgical scholars, have failed to notice the importance of the Naaman story in the liturgical context. Thus, the Naaman story is not fully used either in the Catholic Lectionary (1969) or in the Revised Common Lectionary (1992). In the Catholic Lectionary, the story is related to Mark 1:40ff., which is the story of Jesus' healing of a leper. However, this study argues that the Naaman story would be better employed for the First Sunday after Epiphany, which celebrates the Baptism of Jesus in all three years.
