■520    ▼aYouth  violence  prevention  and  after  school  programs  in  Chicago's  public  schools  was  examined.  A  total  of  72  questions  were  involved  in  the  data  collection  measure.  The  questionnaire  had  sections  focused  on  characteristics  of  youth  violence  prevention  and  the  community  and  organizational  context  of  after  school  programs.  Two  hundred  programs  were  randomly  selected.  A  questionnaire  was  mailed  to  200  after-school  programs  in  the  Chicago  Public  School  system.
■520    ▼aFindings  revealed  that  little  violence  prevention  programming  is  currently  implemented  in  Chicago's  after-school  programs.  After-school  programs  studied  were  not  based  on  an  empirically  based  research  model  on  after-schools.  Findings  suggest  that  the  after-school  programs  do  include  violence  prevention  as  part  of  their  activities.  Respondents  could  not  verify  that  after-school  programs  that  they  had  utilized  actually  yielded  positive  results.  Violence  prevention  activities  are  implemented  in  some  schools  and  in  most  cases  this  occurred  due  to  specific  violence  prevention  training  of  staff.
■520    ▼aPrograms  included  many  elements  that  have  been  found  to  be  associated  with  violence  prevention;  however,  respondents  were  not  aware  of  the  literature  of  this  field.  There  were  statistically  significant  relationships  between  some  of  the  community,  staff  and  other  organizational  variables.  Subscales  of  effective  violence  prevention  activities  were  significantly  correlated  with  each  other.
