요약 : A variety of approaches have been taken to help explain or predict the use of illegal substances by youth. The Risk and Protective Factor model, developed by Drs. David Hawkins and Richard Catalano, is one such model that has been used widely. This model specifies a number of variables that either predict (risk factors) or buffer (protective factors) the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) by youth. However, no prioritization of variables has been offered relative to specific substance use outcomes or for youth at different developmental stages. This study uses discriminant function analysis to explore the degree to which youth exhibiting different patterns of drug use (namely, no use; alcohol use only; alcohol and marijuana use; and alcohol, marijuana and other drug use) can be reliably differentiated by a set of factors that are less than the total number contained in the model. The study further tests the degree to which variable sets are similar or different by three grade-based populations (8th, 10th, and 12th graders). Though a number of limitations of the study are discussed, the results suggest that a smaller variable set consisting of peer use of ATOD, attitudes favorable to drug use, family histories of antisocial behavior and individual social skills serve as the most stable variable cluster for differentiating substance use groups. The study also found that the model's antisocial variables are important for substance use group differentiation for 8th graders when compared to 10th and 12th graders.
