■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  analyze  and  evaluate  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  of  selected  Southern  Baptist  theologians  to  determine  how  they  support  their  conclusions  in  order  to  provide  a  critical  analysis  of  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  in  the  writings  of  the  selected  theologians.  The  Southern  Baptist  theologians  examined  were  James  Petigru  Boyce,  Edgar  Young  Mullins,  Walter  Thomas  Conner,  and  Dale  Moody.  These  theologians  were  selected  for  several  reasons.  Each  theologian  taught  for  several  years  at  Southern  Baptist  institutions  and  produced  systematic  theologies  that  were  used  as  textbooks  in  seminary  classes.  They  also  developed  doctrines  of  original  sin  with  identifiable  components  and  presented  four  different  views  of  the  doctrine.
■520    ▼aThe  critical  analysis  of  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  in  the  writings  of  Southern  Baptist  theologians  involved  several  steps.  First,  the  researcher  examined  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  of  the  theologian  in  order  to  identify  and  explain  the  key  aspects  of  his  doctrine.  Next,  the  major  premises  of  the  theologian's  overall  argument  were  explained  and  evaluated  in  order  to  assess  the  effectiveness  of  the  theologian's  overall  presentation.
■520    ▼aIn  this  study  original  sin  was  defined  as  follows:  The  doctrine  of  original  sin  is  the  exploration  of  the  state  of  individuals  at  birth  in  regard  to  their  relatedness  to  Adam,  to  other  persons,  and  to  God.  Therefore,  the  researcher  also  explored  how  the  theologians  addressed  the  relationship  between  the  individual  person  and  Adam,  other  persons,  and  God.  Finally,  an  analysis  of  the  common  emphases  held  by  the  theologians  was  presented  and  a  discussion  of  the  areas  of  weakness  in  the  Southern  Baptist  presentations  of  original  sin  was  provided.
■520    ▼aCommon  emphases  included  an  affirmation  that  Adam  was  a  historical  person,  that  all  persons  inherit  a  tendency  toward  sinful  behavior  from  him,  and  that  a  christological  perspective  must  be  included  in  the  doctrine  of  original  sin.  The  theologians  surveyed  did  not  incorporate  fully  the  concept  of  corporate  sin  into  their  doctrines.  They  also  failed  to  recognize  the  relationship  between  the  doctrine  and  the  humanity  of  Christ.
