■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  dissertation  was  to  analyze  the  doctrines  of  humanity  and  personal  eschatology  in  the  writings  of  selected  twentieth-century  Southern  Baptist  theologians  in  order  to  discover  the  interrelationship  between  the  two  doctrines.  The  basic  premise  directing  this  study  was  that  one  can  construct  a  comprehensive  and  meaningful  statement  concerning  expectation  for  death  and  what  lies  beyond  only  through  an  understanding  of  how  these  two  doctrines  interrelate.
■520    ▼aThe  theologians  selected  for  the  study  included  Edgar  Young  Mullins,  Walter  Thomas  Conner,  Dale  Moody,  Frank  Stagg,  and  James  Leo  Garrett  Jr.  Each  chapter  offers  an  examination  on  the  way  humanity  and  personal  eschatology  interrelate  in  the  respective  theologian's  system.
■520    ▼aThe  methodology  of  the  dissertation  focused  on  theological  analysis.  The  pattern  for  analysis  remained  consistent  throughout  the  study  of  each  respective  theologian's  work  in  chapters  one  through  five.  Each  chapter  provided  a  summary  of  the  theologian's  doctrines  of  humanity  and  personal  eschatology,  defining  the  major  emphases  in  each  doctrine.  Then  the  study  offered  a  critical  analysis  of  the  way  the  doctrines  interrelated  in  each  theologian's  system.
■520    ▼aThe  concluding  chapter,  drawing  the  findings  of  the  research  together,  was  an  attempt  to  indicate  how  the  interrelationship  between  the  doctrines  of  humanity  and  personal  eschatology  can  lead  to  a  meaningful  statement  of  human  expectation.  First,  the  study  demonstrated  the  need  for  a  comprehensive  treatment  of  physical  death's  relationship  to  human  nature.  Second,  the  study  revealed  the  need  for  a  thorough  examination  of  human  constituency  and  how  it  relates  to  human  experience  at  the  time  of  physical  death.  Finally,  the  study  demonstrated  the  need  to  develop  a  doctrine  of  resurrection  as  the  fulfillment  of  human  potential,  one  that  will  safeguard  personal  identity  after  death  while  affirming  the  corporate  nature  of  resurrection.
