요약 : The purpose of this dissertation was to present a narrative analysis of the discipleship motif in the Fourth Gospel in order to demonstrate the theme's significance for the implied reader. The methodology used called for several actions, which included presenting a sketch of the implied reader, evaluating the explicit and implicit references to discipleship throughout the entire narrative, and interpreting the theme of discipleship in light of the findings. Explicit references were formulated according to semantic domains and clustering and included terminology used in commentary from the narrator, the discourses of Jesus, and the spoken words of other characters. Implicit references consisted of non-verbal literary techniques such as characterization, irony, symbolism, and misunderstandings. Following an introduction, the work divided readily into five chapters. The first chapter constituted the establishment and identity of the implied reader, while the next three chapters consisted of evaluations of the explicit and implicit references to discipleship in John 1-4, John 5-12, and John 13–21 respectively. Finally, an interpretation of the theme made up the last chapter.

요약 : The implied author of the Fourth Gospel fashioned the theme of discipleship as the acceptance of a lifestyle, founded on a relationship with Jesus Christ, demonstrated through the adherence to the responsibilities of that relationship, which culminates into fulfillment and satisfaction. The character of Jesus serves as the paradigm for discipleship, with his relationship to the Father setting the pattern of discipleship. This rendering encourages the implied reader to continue in his or her endeavor as a disciple of Jesus despite any circumstances because the temporal realities of hostility and hardship pale in comparison to the promises of eternal life, joy, peace, satisfaction, and honor.
