■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  analyze  how  the  Christologies  of  Jon  Sobrino  and  Juan  Luis  Segundo  have  influenced  the  shifts  in  their  conception  of  Jesuit  spirituality  from  the  normative  Jesuit  spirituality  formulated  by  Ignatius  of  Loyola.  Sobrino  and  Segundo  were  selected  for  this  study  for  two  reasons.  Both  men  were  Jesuits  and  both  produced  major  christological  works.  Ignatius  of  Loyola  was  selected  because  he  was  the  founder  of  the  Society  of  Jesus  and  the  author  of  Jesuit  spirituality.
■520    ▼aThe  analysis  of  the  relationship  between  Christology  and  spirituality  in  the  writings  of  the  selected  theologians  involved  several  steps.  First,  the  researcher  analyzed  the  spirituality  of  each  theologian  in  order  to  determine  how  Christology  functioned  within  the  spirituality.  Next,  the  spiritualities  of  Sobrino  and  Segundo  were  synthesized  in  order  to  reveal  a  Latin  American  Jesuit  spirituality.  Then  the  Latin  American  Jesuit  spirituality  was  compared  to  the  normative  spirituality  of  Ignatius  in  order  to  determine  shifts.  Finally,  the  shifts  where  analyzed  in  order  to  determine  how  Christology  produced  the  differences.
■520    ▼aThe  study  determined  that  a  different  christological  method  was  responsible  for  the  differences.  Ignatius's  Christology  was  determined  to  be  descending  or  Christology  from  above.  The  result  was  that  Christ  illustrated  the  performance  of  the  components  of  Ignatian  spirituality.  Sobrino  and  Segundo's  Christology  was  determined  to  be  ascending  or  Christology  from  below.  The  result  was  that  the  historical  Jesus  revealed  the  components  of  Latin  American  Jesuit  spirituality.
