요약 : This dissertation is an examination of the pastoral use of the doctrine of God's sovereignty by the Reformer, Theodore Beza. Chapter 1 presents the thesis that Beza's intense pastoral concern was based on his eschatological view of reality. Beza's pastoral vision was fueled by his belief in two eschatological realities: first, that all persons would spend eternity either in heaven or in hell; second, that a Christian's time on earth was a pilgrimage, marked by spiritual conflict, on the way to heaven. Beza's troubled context contributed to his eschatological vision. His outlook on life was intensely pastoral.

요약 : Chapter 2 locates this study in the history of Bezan interpretation. Two faults have been especially predominant in previous studies. Some scholars have limited themselves to a few of Beza's works. Others have paid little attention to the context in which Beza wrote his various treatises. Beza, the passionate Christian, has been absent from most previous research.

요약 : Chapter 3 argues that for Beza all of theology was pastoral. Beza was a biblical humanist, concerned with expositing Scripture. Biblical truth was essential to combat Satan, and to guide persons to heaven. In all his theology Beza was supremely a pastor.

요약 : Chapter 4 argues that Beza's emphasis on God's sovereignty in two of its key aspects—providence and predestination—made sense in light of Beza's eschatological vision. Beza did not emphasize philosophical speculation. Rather, given his precarious situation, he relied on the sovereign God for protection.

요약 : Chapter 5 notes the pastoral outworking of Beza's view of sovereignty in the doctrine of assurance of salvation. Given demonic opposition, assurance was often fleeting. Heaven ultimately would be the source of assurance. Beza employed the practical syllogism but not to the exclusion of several other loci of assurance. God's sovereignty was the answer to the difficulties raised by eschatological reality.

요약 : Three appendices are included. The first is a table of the genre and years of production of Beza's many treatises. The second is a translation of a sermon Beza preached on proper theological methodology. The third contains the aphorisms Beza included in his treatise on predestination, the Tabula.
