■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  ministry  focus  paper  is  to  present  a  contextually  sensitive,  theologically  informed  strategy  for  helping  the  people  of  Park  Hill  Baptist  Church  to  experience  significant  spiritual  growth  and  meaningful  involvement  in  ministry.
■520    ▼aPark  Hill  Baptist  Church  is  a  growing,  medium-sized  church  in  a  small  southern  city.  The  stated  vision  of  the  church  is  to  be  a  community  of  worshippers  committed  to  making,  maturing,  and  mobilizing  disciples  of  Jesus  Christ.  However,  the  church  has  no  strategy  for  making  the  elements  of  the  vision  statement  a  reality.  Specifically,  the  church  lacks  a  plan  for  transforming  people  into  growing,  ministering  disciples.  There  are  elements  of  the  programming  of  the  church  that  make  a  positive  impact  on  the  spirituality  and  ministry  involvement  of  the  people,  but  there  is  no  holistic  plan  for  maturing  and  mobilizing  disciples.  This  paper  presents  such  a  plan.
■520    ▼aThe  paper  contains  three  major  sections.  An  effective  strategy  for  spiritual  formation  and  ministry  mobilization  must  take  into  account  the  uniqueness  of  the  situation  in  which  it  will  be  implemented,  so  the  first  section  of  the  paper  addresses  issues  of  context.  It  offers  a  general  overview  of  the  church  and  its  community,  describing  the  church's  people,  its  history,  and  its  beliefs.  The  paper  then  explores  contextual  issues  directly  related  to  maturing  and  mobilizing  disciples,  examining  Park  Hill's  past  and  present  efforts  at  spiritual  formation  and  ministry  involvement.
■520    ▼aThe  second  section  describes  the  Biblical  and  theological  assumptions  that  serve  as  the  foundation  of  the  strategy  for  maturing  and  mobilizing  disciples.  The  paper  outlines  a  theology  of  spiritual  formation,  including  an  attempt  to  clarify  the  goal  of  the  process  by  asking  the  question,  What  does  a  spiritually  mature  person  look  like?  A  theology  of  ministry  is  also  proposed,  highlighting  the  teachings  of  the  New  Testament  regarding  the  necessity  and  nature  of  every  member  ministry.
■520    ▼aThe  third  section  provides  a  practical  strategy  for  maturing  and  mobilizing  disciples.  The  section  begins  by  outlining  the  roles  of  the  pastor  within  the  new  system  and  the  functions  he  must  fulfill  to  help  the  church  transition  to  the  new  system.  A  church  committed  to  maturing  and  mobilizing  disciples  requires  a  pastor  who  is  an  effective  disciple-maker,  equipper,  and  leader.  The  final  chapter  describes  the  specifics  of  the  strategy.  It  outlines  new  opportunities  for  spiritual  formation,  primarily  through  small  groups  and  mentoring  relationships,  which  will  enhance  the  Sunday  School-based  approach  currently  in  place.  A  new  ministry  structure  is  proposed  that  is  more  organic  and  less  mechanical,  a  structure  that  gives  greater  freedom  to  ministry  leaders  and  ceases  to  rely  on  a  centralized  nominating  committee.  The  heart  of  the  proposed  strategy  is  the  team  of  Bridge  Builders,  interviewers  who  will  help  connect  people  to  appropriate  opportunities  for  growth  and  service.  A  plan  for  implementation  and  ideas  for  evaluation  are  discussed.
