요약 : The various writers who have studied New Testament views on the Jerusalem Temple do not appear to have seriously considered the possibility that Jesus and the earliest Christians truly accepted the Jewish temple as part of their own religion. These writers set out to determine, not whether Jesus and various early Christians accepted or rejected the Jerusalem cult, but rather how they replaced it. Such writers have generally argued that in the New Testament period the temple was relatively unimportant even for Judaism and that the Jewish religion was scarcely shaken by the temple's destruction in the year seventy. The results of the present work, however, demonstrate both that the temple was of fundamental importance to Jesus' Jewish contemporaries and that it found acceptance among the earliest Christians. In fact, there is no evidence in the New Testament that any Christian rejected the temple at Jerusalem as long as that temple was still standing.

요약 : When the temple was no longer standing, however, both Jew and Christian had to explain its demise. Many Jews explained that the destruction was temporary and that God had permitted it as a punishment for Israel's sins. Christian explanations vary. In the Stephen Speech and the Areopagus Speech in Acts, Luke maintained that the temple had never been God's dwelling but was rather a monument to Israel's disobedience. The author of the Fourth Gospel argued that, when the temple was destroyed, it had already been superseded by the resurrected body of Jesus Christ. For the author of Revelation the destruction was temporary, and the old temple would be replaced by a more glorious, heavenly temple, which would soon descend to earth. In the meantime the Christian Church served as a temple. According to the author of Hebrews, which was probably written sometime after the year seventy, the Jerusalem Temple was no longer needed. Through Jesus all people have access to the true temple, which exists in heaven.
