요약 : With the evolution of the Christian-Germanic State (1816-1835), the atmosphere of tolerance towards Jews that had built up during the Enlightenment of the late eighteenth century began to deteriorate. The first of many climactic points of intolerance came during the so-called Judensturm of 1819, during which the ten-year-old Felix Mendelssohn found himself as much a victim as any other Jew, despite his baptism into the Lutheran faith three years before. Clearly, baptism alone was insufficient to prevent this and similar incidents from plaguing the composer throughout his life. As a result, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy led a paradoxical existence—Lutheran, but not Lutheran; Jew, but not a Jew—one that even his half Jewish, half Berlinese surname bears out.

요약 : Several Mendelssohn scholars have attempted to make connections between the composer's complex religious background and his large output of sacred works. However, these scholars have categorically assigned Mendelssohn the title of either Jew or Gentile and thus defined his beliefs as an unwavering constant. More important, they have not brought the most valuable source material to their discussions: the texts the composer chose to set (or not set) in his sacred compositions and the texts of the works he chose to perform and edit as part of his conducting responsibilities. The dissertation examines this neglected resource by comparing the composer's texts with the original Biblical texts from which they stem, charting the changes he made in his libretti (through a study of the composer's handwritten oratorio libretto and music drafts), and noting the changes he made to the sacred works of other composers. The dissertation's findings-based on Mendelssohn's libretti (Moses, Paulus, Elias, and Christus), cuts he made to Bach's St. Matthew Passion for its 1829 revival, and a reassessment of relevant personal correspondence-challenge the general assessment of Mendelssohn's relationship to his Jewish roots, revealing the aforementioned composer of paradoxes. Moreover, the dissertation reveals how Mendelssohn dealt with this paradox over time, moving from portrayals of the Jews which resonated with anti-semitic stereotypes in his earlier oratorios to a somewhat more equitable approach in his later works.
