■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  demonstrate  the  impact  of  contemporary  hermeneutical  methods  on  historical  Jesus  research  through  an  analysis  of  the  work  of  John  Dominic  Crossan  and  N.  T.  Wright.  This  dissertation  will  contend  that  how  one  answers  certain  questions  concerning  hermeneutics  necessarily  influences  one's  conclusions  about  the  historical  Jesus.  There  is  at  this  time  little,  if  anything,  in  print  that  directly  addresses  this  issue.
■520    ▼aThe  basic  sources  used  are  the  writings  of  Crossan  and  Wright.  Both  have  written  a  great  deal  on  the  historical  Jesus.  Both  also  have  addressed  hermeneutical  issues.  The  secondary  material  on  both  hermeneutics  and  historical  Jesus  research  is  voluminous.  Additionally  there  is  a  large  and  growing  body  of  material  that  addresses  each  author's  work.
■520    ▼aThe  methodology  employed  is  primarily  inductive  in  nature.  The  dissertation  is  intended  to  be  an  analysis.  The  methodology  chosen  prevents  the  thesis  of  the  dissertation  from  being  proven  in  a  deductive  sense.  This  does  not  mean,  however,  that  the  thesis  cannot  be  supported,  or  disproved.
■520    ▼aThe  heart  of  the  dissertation  is  in  chapters  two  and  three,  where  the  projects  of  Crossan  and  Wright  are  analyzed.  Each  author's  work  is  analyzed  for  answers  to  several  important  questions  concerning  hermeneutics  and  the  historical  Jesus.  An  evaluation  as  to  how  one  area  impacts  the  other  follows  this  analysis.  Finally  some  conclusions  are  drawn  as  to  which  hermeneutical  issues  most  significantly  impact  historical  Jesus  research.  The  conclusion  also  includes  a  partial  proposed  hermeneutic  for  historical  Jesus  research.
■520    ▼aThe  principle  conclusion  reached  in  this  dissertation  is  that  there  is  support  for  the  thesis  that  the  hermeneutical  methods  employed  by  Crossan  and  Wright  shape  to  a  significant  degree  their  respective  conclusions  concerning  the  historical  Jesus.  More  broadly  speaking,  the  dissertation  shows  that  the  question,  “What  is  a  text?”  has  a  profound  influence  on  how  one  approaches  the  question  of  the  historical  Jesus.  Related  to  this,  how  one  answers  the  question,  “What  is  the  relationship  of  hermeneutics  to  history?”  determines  how  important  one  considers  the  question,  “What  is  a  text?”  to  be.
