요약 : This dissertation seeks highlight the role of ritual in establishing and maintaining cross-cultural koinoaia in the churches of Galatia. By reflecting theologically on the rituals of baptism and the Agape meal, Paul reframes the rhetorical situation, revealing the rhetorical power of ritual to move participants from one perspective on reality to another. It is my contention that the Galatian churches were divided along ethnic lines between Jewish and Gentile Christians and that Paul invoked these rituals not only to demarcate the apocalyptic passage from the old age of the flesh to the new age of the Spirit but also to inculturate and embody the gospel in the Galatians' communal life.

요약 : In the fallout of the Reformation debates over faith versus works, Paul's own ritual commitments and the way in which ritual shaped his world-view have been obscured. Using historical-critical, sociological, rhetorical, liturgical, ritual, and anthropological methods, my thesis seeks to bring the situational details of Galatians to the fore by grounding the text in the historical setting of central Anatolia and illuminating the propriety of Paul's discourse.

요약 : I hypothesize a cultural and ethnic division between Hebrew and Gentile Christians in Paul's audience. The Hebrew Christians, I maintain, accepted a new ‘circumcision gospel’ that was rejected by the Gentile Christians, who subsequently threatened to apostatize to paganism. Paul's letter employs a deliberative rhetorical strategy to contrast the honor of their new status of righteousness in Christ, embodied through baptism and the Agape meal, with the dishonor of the competing "fleshly" status claims inherent in both circumcision and apostasy. These ritual practices both advanced Paul's rhetorical appeal for a communal rapprochement and inculturated the gospel in the Galatian churches by making explicit the implicit meaning of their common ritual life. Read in this way, Paul's theological reflections on the meaning of baptism and the Agape meal for the Galatian churches make Galatians itself a work of primitive Christian mystagogy, illuminating the ritualizing process in a specific New Testament context.
