요약 : This study analyzes pacifism, militarism, and patriotism in the history of the Assemblies of God. The evidence reveals that the Assemblies of God had a pacifistic minority in its early years but that patriotism and militarism eventually comprised the essence of Assemblies of God attitudes toward war. Chapter one provides an introduction to the study and investigates historical and theological roots of Assemblies of God pacifism. Quakerism, the nineteenth century Holiness Movement, biblical literalism, eschatology, restorationism, missions, and the baptism in the Holy Spirit are identified as influential. Chapter two explores the justification of Assemblies of God pacifism from 1914 to 1940. The social situation and competing attitudes toward government are considered as well as the theological defense of pacifism and the early witnesses to militarism. Chapter three documents and analyzes the decline of pacifism and the dramatic increase in patriotism and militarism in the Assemblies of God from 1941-1967. The evidence reveals that they abandoned earlier scriptural support for pacifism and instead sought identification with American evangelicalism and the secular establishment. Chapter four provides evidence that since 1968 the Assemblies of God has fully entrenched themselves in their militaristic support of American nationalism and even applauds condemnation of those who oppose war. However, a concern for Pentecostal pacifism reemerged in the 1980s and 1990s.

요약 : Chapter five consists of an evaluation of the ethical transformation that has occurred in the Assemblies of God. First, even though early Assemblies of God leaders claimed otherwise, pacifism never achieved majority status. Second, many in the Assemblies of God desired acceptability from the American culture and government as well as the conservative religious establishment. Third, this led to the implication that they interpreted Scripture in manners that supported the secular and religious establishments. They began ignoring the teachings of Jesus regarding violence. Fourth, the Assemblies of God narrowed both their ethical concerns and their understanding of the mission of the church. Thus, the Assemblies of God lost elements of Pentecost. They disregarded the nonviolence of Jesus and thus exchanged the Spirit-empowered message of suffering love for a more popular and less critical Americanized religion.
