요약 : This dissertation is about baptismal theology and practice in the Church of the Nazarene from its beginnings to the present. However, it is not simply an historical analysis. It is descriptive, but it is also interpretive and prescriptive. As such, it is fundamentally an exercise in practical theology.
초록/해제
요약 : The initial two chapters deal with the baptismal beginnings of the denomination. Theological formulations and compromises, paralleled by ongoing baptismal practice, are treated. The period under consideration in these chapters runs from the first years of the twentieth century through 1936. Within this timeframe, theological ambiguity and plurality of practice begin to give way to the dominance of a believer's baptismal model. This development is in striking contrast to the thought and practice of many early and influential leaders in the life of the church.
초록/해제
요약 : Between 1936 and 1972, some of the historic baptismal affirmations of the denomination come under attack and baptismal practice becomes increasingly monolithic. A believer's baptismal model that places great emphasis upon infant dedication, early childhood conversion, and baptism as a profession of one's faith ascends to dominance. The process culminates with the publication of the denomination's Manual in 1972 when the church's ritual for infant baptism is deleted. The ritual for infant dedication essentially stands alone.
초록/해제
요약 : The most recent period of the denomination's history regarding baptism is treated in chapters five and six. Through the late 1980s this period closely resembles the previous one. Baptism, for the most part, is perceived as the domain of conscious believers and is a way of witnessing to one's conversion. In the last ten years or so, however, the recovery of baptism as an initiatory event appropriate for all people, including infants, has begun. The effects upon baptismal practice of this recent shift, by some, in baptismal thought is yet to be fully determined.
초록/해제
요약 : The concluding chapter sets the work in the emerging field of practical theology and suggests that the stages of human development as understood by Erik Erikson be invited into the baptismal conversation. By doing so, the Church of the Nazarene may find additional rationale for preserving its historic position on baptismal plurality and for reinvigorating its practice of infant baptism.
