요약 : This project investigated the claims of Richard Bauckham that a critical consensus view of Matthew's audience was a twentieth-century phenomenon that was hermeneutically irrelevant. Bauckham contended that critical scholarship has embraced a view that Matthew wrote out of and to a closed community. He argued that the Gospels were written for a general audience. If Bauckham's claims were proven to be true, much of twentieth-century scholarship's work would be challenged. No one has applied the hermeneutical repercussion of the differing views to specific passages of Scripture.

요약 : The study began with a broad historical survey of New Testament scholarship from the first-century until now. The survey considered the period of the Church Fathers which demonstrated little or no interest in today's critical concerns. Theology, the development of the canon, and apologetics were the focus of the first centuries of biblical scholarship. The Reformers highlighted the theological perspective of justification by faith. The eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries were influenced by the Age of Reason philosophers. The twentieth-century proved to be the most prolific for New Testament studies.

요약 : The influence of historical criticism upon the critical consensus view was evaluated. The birth of newer criticisms such as genre and social-scientific criticism were evaluated. Their impact on the development of the Matthean community was investigated.

요약 : The prevalent use of the term "community" among current New Testament scholars needed to be considered. The term's apparent abundant use often went undefined. An analysis of New Testament critics use of "community" as an audience versus its use as context was performed.

요약 : The differences between scholars holding each of the respective positions were compared using specific passages of Scripture. The divorce passage in Matthew 5:31-32,the mission of the twelve in Matthew 10:5-15, and the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20 were analyzed exegetically The critical consensus scholars did not address the specifics of the text in great detail in any of the respective passages. The general audience perspective yielded applications that could be made to multiple settings.
초록/해제
요약 : Critical consensus scholars found that the Matthean divorce exception clause was for Matthew's community only. No measurable difference was discovered in comparing the two perspectives applied to the Matthew 10:5-15 passage. Critical consensus scholars attempted to exclude the Matthean community from participation in the Gentile and worldwide mission of the Great Commission.
