초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation inquires into the relationship between a narrative approach to Christian ethics and the practice of spiritual discernment by which the church chooses persons to serve as ordained moral and religious leaders. The dissertation argues that narrative ethics provides the best approach in the field of contemporary ethics for conceptualizing the church's practice of spiritual discernment.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter One provides a bibliographic overview of the turn to narrative in Christian ethics. The chapter discusses representative theologians, cultural factors, and representative themes. It also provides a critical evaluation of the strengths and constitutive problems of narrative Christian ethics.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter Two extends the themes outlined in the first chapter by developing a conception of the church as a narrative community of discernment. The philosophical and theological ethics of Josiah Royce, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Stanley Hauerwas provide the theoretical orientation for the chapter.
초록/해제
요약 : Drawing on this theoretical orientation, Chapter Three inquires into the relations between Christian liturgy and ethics. The work of Timothy F. Sedgwick, William H. Willimon, Harmon L. Smith, and James F. White help make the relevant connections. The narrative character of the liturgy of the word and sacrament in The Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church and the moral logic of baptism illustrate the claim that liturgical and ritual practices ground and sustain the morality of the church over time.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter Four develops a narrative approach to the process of spiritual discernment in the church. The work of theologians Christopher Morse and Luke Timothy Johnson provides grounds for construing spiritual discernment as an ecclesial practice of judging the worthiness of claimants to loyalty in narratives of faith experience. The chapter concludes by applying the moral logic of baptism to a concrete case of spiritual discernment in the church: the ordination of openly homosexual persons to the priesthood.
초록/해제
요약 : In conclusion, Chapter Five argues that conceiving spiritual discernment as a theonomous social practice helps the church navigate the tensions between loyalty to tradition and loyalty to the Spirit's call to transcendence.
