초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation, a work in liturgical history, seeks to determine the origins and development of the sixteenth century Lutheran baptismal rites. As such, it is a work examining the continuity and discontinuity between medieval and Reformation era worship with regard to the praxis of baptism. In order to provide the basis for analyzing the development of the Lutheran rites, an evaluation of the development of the medieval rite is provided. The foundations of medieval practice in the Gelasian Sacramentary and subsequent missals and pontificals are discussed. A thorough exploration of the baptismal rite as it appeared in the medieval rituals, the documents upon which the evangelical rites are based, is rendered. Baptismal rites from representative and significant rituals from thirteenth through the sixteenth centuries are studied. The two rituals that most closely reflect Luther's 1523 translation of the baptismal rite in use in Wittenberg at that time, Magdeburg Agenda and the Agenda communis, are probed. Likewise, Luther's 1523 translation and his preparation of an evangelically-reformed rite in 1526, as well as the Lutheran rites that developed subsequent to Luther's rites, are the focus of attention of this dissertation. Attention is given both to the ritual/liturgical development of the rites and to the baptismal theology evident in the rites. Deliberate investigation is made of the origins of the so-called "Flood Prayer" that appeared in Luther's 1523 baptismal rite, tracing that development to various medieval precursors. The last two chapters of the dissertation examine the lines of dependency between the various medieval rites, the rites of Luther, subsequent translations of the medieval rites made by other reformers, and the first reformed Lutheran rites that appeared after Luther's 1526 rite. In most cases, ritually, and in many cases theologically, there is a direct line of continuity between the medieval rites, Luther's rites, and the rites of the Lutheran church orders. The first period surveys influential or unique Lutheran rites that appeared from 1524 through 1545 and the second period surveys those influential or unique rites that appeared from 1555 through 1580.
