초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation will examine the lives and contributions of three African-Americans: George Liele, Moses Baker, and David George, and their impact on the Baptist Foreign Missionary Movement. These men emigrated from what is now the United States, in 1782 and 1783. As they each settled in their new homelands, they planted Baptist churches. Their work began a decade before William Carey, "Father of the Modern Missionary Movement," sailed for India. Their ministries and appeals for help influenced the Baptist Missionary Society in the selection of its second mission field, Sierra Leone, and its third frontier, the West Indies.
초록/해제
요약 : The major sources used for this dissertation were: John Rippon, The Baptist Annual Register (1790--1793) and (1794--1797); The Evangelical Magazine (1803) and (1804); and Periodical Accounts Relative to the Baptist Missionary-Society 1 (1800) and 6 (1817). In addition, F. A. Cox, History of the Baptist Missionary Society, from 1792 to 1842 (London: T. Ward & Co., and G. & J. Dyer, 1842); John Clark, W. Dendy, and J. M. Phillippo, The Voice of Jubilee: A Narrative of the Baptist Mission, Jamaica, from Its Commencement (London: John Snow, 1865); and John Clarke, Memorials of Baptist Missionaries in Jamaica (London: Yates & Alexander, 1869) were consulted extensively.
초록/해제
요약 : The method of research used in this dissertation focused on the sources that were either authored by the three men or by those who personally knew them. It was also necessary to consult secondary works by writers who were acquainted with them. Due to the early date of the sources, spelling, grammar, spacing, and punctuation used in the direct quotations, differ from current standards. Therefore, the sources will be cited, as much as possible, as they were written at the time of publication.
초록/해제
요약 : The contributions of these African-American antecedents of the Baptist Foreign Missionary Movement have been neglected in the field of missiology. This dissertation will demonstrate that the ministries of Liele and Baker influenced the decision of the Baptist Missionary Society to send missionaries to Jamaica. It will also demonstrate that the Baptist Missionary Society planted its second mission field, Sierra Leone, due to the influence of George.
