요약 : The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the beginning, ambiguity, and deterioration of the relationship of Alexander Campbell with the Baptists, with attention to the following problems: what reasons impelled Campbell to join a Baptist congregation, what factors led to Campbell's estrangement from the Baptists, and what events led to Campbell's severing his relationship with the Baptists. The researcher concentrated on Campbell's articles in The Christian Baptist as the primary source of data. Campbell's baptism in 1812 designated the beginning of Campbell's Baptist period, although his Brush Run Church did not affiliate with the Redstone Baptist Association until 1815. The relationship between Campbell and the Baptists grew ambiguous as he represented the Baptist position at debates with Walker, MacCalla, and Owen, and as Campbellite evangelists gained converts in the Ohio Valley and Middle Tennessee. The theological positions that Campbell advocated in The Christian Baptist further complicated matters, particularly when they gained the attention of Spencer Clack and George Waller, editors of the Baptist Recorder, and Robert Semple, Baptist statesman and historian, all of whom attacked Campbell and his theology. Baptist associations began the process of separation from Campbell when in 1829 the Beaver Association issued the Beaver Anathema and several Baptist associations followed its lead. Campbell desired to remain in fellowship with the Baptists, but the cumulative effect of many anathemas and much criticism impelled him to sever ties with the Baptists in 1830. One can attribute the acrimony between Campbell and the Baptists partially to the anxiety of the postbellum and Jacksonian eras, and partially to the combustible mixture of Campbell's often sarcastic writing style and personality with his determined Baptist opponents. The net effect of Campbell's controversy with the Baptists was the creation of another American Christian denomination, the Disciples, despite Campbell's protoecumenical plea for Christian unity.
