요약 : This examination of Martin Luther King, Jr. emerged from an interest in his theology, but more pointedly, the significance of his soteriological methodology. The focal point of this examination is King's existential milieu and its impact on the formulation of his theology. King's historical heritage, church background, relationship with his parents, educational background, and finally, his involvement in the civil rights movement of the late 1950's and mid 1960's shaped his theology. His soteriology developed in its socio-political emphasis as he found himself juxtaposed between the church and the public square.
초록/해제
요약 : King structured his soteriology based upon the conflict of his rearing in the segregated South and his black Baptist religious setting. He also formulated the intellectual rationale concerning his soteriology from the religious philosophies that he encountered in his educational pursuits. In so doing, King wove his theology as a conglomerate of these influences upon him.
초록/해제
요약 : This study consists of five sections. Part one introduces the subject of the study, along with its need and purpose as well as its scope and limitation. This work aids evangelicals as well as non-evangelicals in understanding King's theology of social redemption.
초록/해제
요약 : Part two considers the black church experience, in conjunction with the impact that King's education had upon him. The effect of his native church background and various scholastic personages shaped his liberal theological social views.
초록/해제
요약 : Part three identifies King's understanding of God's providence, humanity's sin, and the person of Jesus Christ. This analysis considers his approach to the fall and Christ's redemption in society. Jesus is the moral example for mankind to follow. King in turn took this theology into American society to change its racial practice.
초록/해제
요약 : Part four examines King's methodological praxis in selective successes and failures. Some of King's critics, both within and beyond the movement, will be considered. The effect of this criticism upon King identifies the place of his faith, life, and ministry in the waning years of the civil rights movement. He became the icon and sacrifice of his theological position and socio-political dream.
초록/해제
요약 : Part five summarizes King's impact upon America. It points to the difference his socio-political soteriology has made in the nation. King brought socially engaged religion into the public domain and America was altered. At a significant level, King's work touched the possibilities of religion in civil engagement for social improvement.
