요약 : The fourth century C.E. was an important period in the history of the development of annual cycles of feasts and fasts in the various Christian communities of late antiquity. At the beginning of the century most liturgical calendars featured only a paschal celebration (of locally varying duration), commemorations of local martyrs, and, in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, an observance of Christ's birth and/or baptism on January 6. By century's end, however, most of these calendars had reached forms that many Christians today would recognize. The history of these developments has been the subject of extensive research. However, a lacuna in our knowledge concerns the eastern province of Cappadocia in Asia Minor. Earlier scholars have concentrated on developments in Jerusalem, Rome and the Gallican West, but while Cappadocian sources have been used to document such areas as the solidification of Nicene trinitarian doctrine and the integration of Greek philosophical models and Christianity, what these sources reveal about the development of the liturgical year in fourth-century Cappadocia has remained largely uncharted territory.

요약 : Using the comparative historico-textual methodological principles of Robert Taft, theoretician and practitioner of the comparative liturgiology of Anton Baumstark, this dissertation fills in that area of the map. One of Taft's important correctives of Baumstark is that, while Baumstark focused on the comparison of similarities across regions, time periods and traditions, Taft is just as interested in the differences. With this corrective as a guide, this study is built upon the recognition that, while Cappadocia's calendar was undoubtedly shaped by some of the same forces that influenced the calendars of other regions, the particularities of time and place, as well as cultural and ecclesio-political contexts, rendered its development unique. In addition, the idea that this development was a smooth process is challenged by attention to Paul F. Bradshaw's call to look for disruptions and pockets of resistance to trends and conciliar legislation.

요약 : The primary textual sources used are the liturgical year homilies of five figures from Cappadocia and nearby Pontus who preached and wrote during this period---Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Amphilochius of Iconium and Asterius of Amaseia.
