요약 : This study examines the social construction, transformation, maintenance, and consequences of identity among a group of undocumented Mexican immigrants whose migration experience is determined by their participation in a Southern Baptist mission in Texas. Borrowing analytical tools from interactional sociolinguistics, mediated discourse, narrative and discourse analysis, I examine instances in which members of this mission appropriate practices and discourse. I suggest that a close observation of this appropriation helps us to understand identity as a real-time, observable phenomenon through which people become who they claim to be through action and interaction.

요약 : The site of this study is a small community of farm and ranch workers that I have named "Texas Town." Data were collected through ethnographic fieldwork during the spring and summer of 2000, and include audio recordings and field notes of daily activities of the community members, ESL, and Citizenship classes that I helped to conduct while living in the community, and interviews of mission members. Through a close analysis of these activities of community members, their interactions, classes and interviews, I identify specific means they appropriate to enact their identities. The discourse they appropriated during interviews revealed common characteristics members frequently attributed to themselves in a dichotomous temporality, illustrated particular instances of a simultaneous reproduction of their social world, and functioned as a means through which they constituted their change. The worship service and its main centerpiece, the sermon, are discussed as a complex practice where doctrine can be observed at the level of concrete action. The interwoven rhetorical moves and structural segmentation of the worship service, through a combination of action, discourse, and practice, produce a new worldview which members appropriate in their everyday lives. Identity transformation and maintenance are also enacted by community members through the telling of the witness story (recounting of one's own conversion), and through the act of witnessing itself (the attempt to convert others). The study concludes with a discussion of the consequences of identity transformation for the lives of these undocumented immigrant members of the Southern Baptist mission in Texas Town.
