초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation examines the rise of Baptist religion in eighteenth-century Virginia. It follows the history of a single Baptist church that was constituted in Isle of Wight County in 1774. It investigates the reasons this church was constituted, and assesses its history.
초록/해제
요약 : This study focuses on a detailed reading of the minute books of this church and two of its affiliated congregations in Southampton County. Church membership lists are cross-referenced with personal property tax lists and recorded wills to construct a socio-economic portrait of the church. From this portrait, the historical narrative of this single church is centered within three larger historical narratives: the history of southeastern Virginia, the history of Baptist religion in colonial and early national Virginia, and the history of southern evangelical Protestantism in the newly formed United States.

요약 : For this presentation, other primary documents relating to this church are studied, notably, the writings of its pastor, the Reverend David Barrow. Barrow wrote a diary of his travels to Ohio and Kentucky in 1795; he published a circular letter explaining his reasons for leaving Virginia in 1798, as well as a treatise denouncing slavery in 1808. These works are analyzed closely, alongside other primary documents which describe the rise and development of the Baptists in Virginia.
초록/해제
요약 : The evidence reveals that in late colonial Virginia, individuals organized Baptist churches amidst increasing social inequality. However, in the churches, these individuals were able to school themselves in the practices of equality, mutual aid and democratic process. As practiced by women, slaves, free blacks and less privileged white men, the ideology of these dissident Baptists presented a pronounced challenge to the existing social order. In the 1790s, to meet this challenge, and to circumscribe the full participation of women, slaves and free blacks, slaveholders rewrote church covenants and rules of church governance. They also silenced expressions of dissent and forced anti-slavery clergy like David Barrow to choose exile.
초록/해제
요약 : By resurrecting the testimonies of the silenced and exiled Virginia Baptists, this study demonstrates the extent to which slaveholders worked to control and shape religion in order to build an empire for slavery.
