■520    ▼aAffiliation  and  participation  in  a  religious  belief  system  are  recognized  as  being  associated  through  the  proximate  determinant  variables  with  total  fertility  in  the  United  States.  This  research  explores  the  post  baby-boom  relationship  between  religion  and  fertility  and  the  way  that  it  is  mediated  through  a  variety  of  religious  and  demographic  variables.  The  study  examines  current  theories  about  the  religion/fertility  interaction  within  the  context  of  a  specific  religion  (The  Church  of  Jesus  Christ  of  Latter-Day  Saints)  utilizing  classic  demographic  techniques  as  well  as  LDS-specific  measures  of  religiosity  and  ethnography.  The  data  gathered  from  the  LDS  participants  will  be  compared  with  information  obtained  from  the  National  Survey  of  Family  Growth,  Cycle  5,  1995.
■520    ▼aWhile  a  relationship  between  level  of  activity  in  religious  organizations  and  fertility  is  hypothesized,  in  reality  little  direct  relationship  existed  between  the  two  for  members  of  the  LDS  church  in  the  Silicon  Valley  (Los  Altos)  area  of  the  US.  Results  of  regression  and  correlation  analyses  indicate  that  the  most  important  variable  for  explaining  fertility  variance  is  age  at  first  sexual  intercourse  In  addition,  the  Latter-day  Saint  populations  demonstrated  more  correlations  between  the  independent  variables,  religious  variables,  and  fertility  than  any  other  group  (Baptists,  Catholics,  No  Religion,  and  Protestant)  examined,  indicating  that  religious  beliefs  may  play  a  more  important  role  in  the  everyday  lives  and  decisions  of  Latter-day  Saints  than  they  do  in  other  populations.
