■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  analyze  and  critique  the  doctrine  of  atonement  within  the  writings  of  Walter  Thomas  Conner.  As  a  professor  of  theology  at  Southwestern  Baptist  Theological  Seminary,  Ft.  Worth,  Texas,  Conner's  teaching  and  writing  careers  were  very  influential  within  the  Southern  Baptist  Convention.  This  work  searched  for  possible  influences  Conner  may  have  had  on  the  SBC.  This  research  demonstrated  that  Conner's  doctrine  of  atonement  was  a  modified  Penal  Substitutionary  Theory  in  his  early  years.  He  believed  the  atonement  to  be  curse-bearing,  propitiatory,  and  substitutionary.
■520    ▼aAs  Conner's  thought  progressed  in  his  later  years,  he  was  affected  by  multiple  influences,  including  persons  and  historical  events.  Conner  advocated  a  doctrine  of  atonement  that  understood  Jesus  as  victorious  over  sin,  not  as  a  penal  substitute  for  humanity.  Conner  believed  Jesus'  death  provided  a  vital,  regenerative  life  for  all  those  who  placed  their  faith  in  the  Victor---Jesus  Christ.
