초록/해제
요약 : Surveyed literature of music ministry indicates that hymn repertoires of typical Southern Baptist congregations are static, and congregations are resistant to the acquisition of unfamiliar hymns. Authorities in the field of music ministry concur that the static hymn repertoires negatively affect congregational worship. The literature of music ministry proposes a methodology presenting biographical information about the author, or theological information about the text of the hymn prior to exposure to reduce resistance to unfamiliar hymns. The basis of this methodology is observational rather than empirical. The purpose of this study was to test empirically the effect of the presentation of biographical and theological information on preferential response to unfamiliar hymns.
초록/해제
요약 : Subjects (N = 192) were adult members from nine Southern Baptist congregations in central North Carolina. Subjects sang three unfamiliar hymns during a Sunday morning worship service in a traditional manner with no information presented prior to the first hymn, biographical information prior to the second hymn, and theological information prior to the third hymn. Subjects attended a post-service meeting, listened to an excerpt recording with information, indicated prior familiarity with hymns, indicated preference toward hymns on a five-point Likert scale, and provided demographic background information including gender, age, years of worship participation, preferential worship style, formal education, theological education, music education, years of choral experience, and years of instrumental experience.
초록/해제
요약 : Results of logistic regression showed that the effect of biographical information on preferential response was significant (p = .0162). Examination of demographic background factors showed biographical information had a greater effect among subjects without theological education, males, and younger subjects (p < .05). The effect of theological information was not significant.
초록/해제
요약 : The findings indicated that the presentation of biographical information is preferable over theological information for optimal preferential response to unfamiliar hymns. Further, the findings indicated that reexamination and update of the methodology prescribing theological information is warranted.
