■520    ▼aThe  main  focus  of  this  project  is  on  the  training  of  the  church  laity  empowering  our  inner  city  youth  to  realize  their  potential.  Zion  Hill  Baptist  Church  located  in  the  South  Ward  of  Newark  is  heavily  populated  with  youth  that  live  in  homes  maintained  by  a  single  parent.  There  are  those  who  feel  that  these  young  people  are  at  a  disadvantage  because  they  lack  tools  enjoyed  by  suburban  youth.  Many  in  the  church  look  to  develop  ministries  that  will  address  the  needs  of  children  that  are  living  in  urban  cities  where  problems  of  unemployment,  substandard  housing,  overcrowded  schools,  parental  incarceration,  drugs,  and  prostitution  interfere  with  their  growth.  In  order  for  the  Zion  Hill  Baptist  Church  members  to  determine  how  they  could  be  of  assistance  to  at  risk  youth,  research  was  needed.  This  project  included  interviews  with  educators,  politicians,  neighborhood  residents,  and  our  inner  city  youth  with  an  emphasis  on  obtaining  as  much  input  as  possible  regarding  what  they  viewed  as  the  main  issues  contributing  to  the  problem  of  the  youth  in  the  South  Ward  of  Newark  with  reaching  their  potential.
■520    ▼aA  multiple  case  study  approach  was  utilized  in  collecting  data.  The  Lay  Advisory  Committee  members  were  given  a  questionnaire  in  an  attempt  to  determine  beforehand  what  they  thought  the  problem  with  why  youth  do  not  realize  their  potential.  Three  schools  located  in  the  South  Ward  were  targeted  for  our  research.  The  committee  decided  to  limit  the  research  to  youth  ages  nine  to  thirteen  years  of  age.
■520    ▼aAfter  the  research  phase,  it  was  decided  that  four  youth  development  workshops  would  help  prepare  church  lay  members  to  work  with  these  youth.  The  titles  of  the  workshops  were  group  facilitation,  self-esteem,  value  education,  and  conflict  resolution.  The  workshops  presented  gave  some  basic  tools  and  skills  that  would  enhance  the  development  of  the  youth.  The  conclusion  drawn  from  this  project  was  that  improving  these  young  people  chances  for  development  in  the  South  Ward  of  Newark  can  greatly  be  enhanced  by  the  church  taking  an  interest  in  their  growth.
