■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  project  was  to  engage  a  local  church  and  its  community  in  developing  a  strategy  to  enhance  and  revitalize  its  neighborhood.  The  first  phase  of  the  project  involved  understanding  and  explaining  the  church's  call  to  perform  such  work  known  as,  Social  Ministry.  It  identified  the  biblical  foundation  for  this  call  by  researching  a  scripturally-defined  [or  grounded]  view  of  what  the  church  is  and  what  the  church  does.  The  vital  importance  of  pastoral  leadership  and  vision  in  this  process  was  also  explicated.
■520    ▼aSecondly,  the  African-American  church  and  pastor  were  used  as  particular  models.  This  project  documents  the  significant  involvement  of  both  pastors  and  churches  in  social  ministry  throughout  history.  Specifically,  the  works  of  several  representative  African-American  congregations  that  have  and  continue  to  revitalize  their  communities  were  also  discussed.
■520    ▼aFinally,  The  Church  of  the  Redeemer  Baptist  in  Philadelphia,  Pennsylvania  was  used,  as  a  practical  primary  model  to  illustrate  how  one  local  church  joined  with  its  community,  through  a  social  ministry  project,  to  meet  certain  needs  of  the  community.  This  project  explains  in  a  descriptive,  analytical,  critical,  and  practical  manner  the  church's  step-by-step  process  to  develop  a  Community  Development  Corporation  known  as  the  Redeemer  Renaissance  Community  Development  Corporation  (RRCDC).
