■520    ▼aThis  paper  focuses  on  discovering  ways  of  empowering  people  to  improve  themselves  in  ways  that  are  theologically  sound,  in  the  context  of  membership  in  a  local  congregation,  the  Calvary  Baptist  Church  of  Morristown,  New  Jersey.  Two  approaches  are  used,  one  of  which  is  Individual  Empowerment---working  with  individuals  to  address  personal  challenges  in  their  lives  and  assisting  them  in  various  ways  to  overcome  these  challenges.  The  other  approach  explored  is  economic  development,  which  comprises  a  wide  range  of  activities  designed  to  successfully  address  challenges  facing  the  broader  congregation  collectively.  The  project  was  divided  into  two  phases,  with  a  volunteer  team  of  approximately  twenty  church  members  distributed  among  six  working  teams.  The  first  component  of  the  project  consisted  of  the  respective  teams  consulting  and  working  with  selected  individuals  in  the  congregation  in  one  of  the  following  areas:  Job  Networking,  Job  Training,  Personal  Counseling,  Financial/Investment  Counseling,  Housing  Counseling,  and  Business  Startup  Counseling.  The  second  phase  of  the  project  involved  proposing  an  economic  development  platform  based  on  feedback  from  these  teams,  and  input  from  other  faith-based  organizations  gathered  through  site  visits,  personal  inquiry,  and  outside  research.
■520    ▼aThe  end  result  has  been  (1)  the  assessment  of  the  interim  results  of  the  six  teams  in  their  efforts  to  empower  individuals  needing  assistance  in  their  focal  areas,  (2)  compiling  the  teams'  suggestions  about  how  to  apply  lessons  learned  to  a  wider  audience,  (3)  determining  how  similar  projects  have  been  managed  by  other  faith-based  entities,  and,  (4)  developing  a  set  of  recommendations  to  the  Senior  Pastor  and  Joint  Leadership  Board  about  how  to  embark  on  a  program  of  economic  development  to  empower  the  congregation,  both  individually  and  as  a  body.
