요약 : Martyrdom neither began nor ended with the early Christians. It continues today among people of varying traditions and causes. Certain unique, shared elements of martyrdom unite such diverse groups as hunger strikers, drivers of car bombs, and the early Christians who were executed by the Romans. Martu&d12; v means "witness" in Greek, and martyrs understand their deaths as meaningful because they offer a form of testimony about their beliefs and culture.
초록/해제
요약 : My dissertation examines the lives, imprisonment and deaths of the early Christian martyrs as recorded in the Acts of the Christian Martyrs . These vivid, hagiographic texts of the second through fourth centuries CE frequently refer to martyrdom as a "second baptism" or a "baptism in blood." Through this metaphor, my research describes the required training, preparation, and commitment by the martyrs and their community, particularly the ways martyrs were likened to athletes and soldiers.
초록/해제
요약 : As baptism connotes rebirth and re-creation, my research also details the social dimensions of the involvement of the martyrs' families, the creation of a new sense of family, and how gender roles and sexuality shifted within the community around the martyrs awaiting their execution. Greater understanding of the historical roots and social implications of martyrdom should help us better to comprehend contemporary martyrs and also provide us with greater insight into an often neglected aspect of early Christianity.
