요약 : This study examines Baptism in the context of Christian education. It explores what the Church should teach on Baptism; and demonstrates how Baptism in turn elucidates the Church's teaching ministry. The exploration takes the form of a comparison, between three influential positions: of Horace Bushnell, Karl Barth, and Alexander Schmemann. This comparison is based on four indices, derived from Aristotle's four factors (aitia)---the material, efficient, formal and telic; which are restated as the person, power, pattern and purpose of Baptism.

요약 : The positions of Bushnell, Barth and Schmemann contrast sharply. The study becomes expansive. However, salient findings can be stated succinctly, as a baptismal "catechism." Who is the person in Baptism? The person is best conceived as a tri-unity of spirit, soul and body. This Byzantine anthropology corresponds with traditional baptismal rites---their exorcisms (spirit), instructions (soul), and bodily plungings (body). The three dimensions of personhood relate to three distinct educational activities: formation, information and transformation. Describing the perichoresis of these activities becomes a major goal of this dissertation.

요약 : What is the pattern of Baptism? Death-and-resurrection is named as the central pattern. This pattern permeates the Christian's dialectical identity; the learner's spirit-to-Spirit relationality; and the dynamics of transformation. These themes are explored through the theory of James Loder.

요약 : What is the power of Baptism? Baptismal power is construed as a relationality---of grace and faith, and of divine and human energies. The concept of relationality enables greater comprehension of "Spirit Baptism." In addition, Baptism involves both the Church and the person: a decision to focus on one or the other may underlie debates of "infants-versus-believers."

요약 : What is the purpose of Baptism? Baptism unites Spirit and matter in a way that transforms people and creation. An original insight of this study is that, in Scripture, baptizing happens by all four ancient elements---water, earth, air and fire. Baptizing means being immersed, simultaneously, into creation and into the inner life of God. The two explanations are contradictory, but complementary. The relational and antinomic thinking required to understand Baptism thus becomes catalytic for Christian education in general.
