■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  will  be  to  examine  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  as  it  was  developed  during  three  eras  in  Southern  Baptist  Theological  Seminary's  history  in  order  to  determine  whether  or  not  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  can  be  at  least  one  basis  for  cooperation  in  missions  and  evangelism  for  Southern  Baptists.  The  three  eras  that  will  be  examined  are  the  Founding  Period,  the  Transitional  Period,  and  the  Post  World  War  II  Period.  Since  Southern  Baptist  Theological  Seminary  is  the  Southern  Baptist  Convention's  first  seminary,  representative  theologians  from  each  period  were  chosen  from  that  institution,  viz.,  James  Petigru  Boyce,  Edgar  Young  Mullins,  and  Dale  Moody.  The  dissertation  will  examine  the  doctrine  of  original  sin  from  an  epistemological  standpoint  as  expounded  by  these  three  theologians  and  will  note  similarities  and  differences.  The  writer  will  seek  to  discover  which  of  the  three  theologians'  doctrines  of  original  sin  best  provides  at  least  one  basis  for  cooperation  in  missions  and  evangelism  for  Southern  Baptists.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  of  the  dissertation  will  set  the  philosophical  and  theological  context  with  a  brief  exposition  of  Calvin's  understanding  of  original  sin  and  its  relation  to  what  is  termed  herein  "the  epistemological  problem."
■520    ▼aWith  the  theological  and  philosophical  context  delineated,  chapter  two  will  expound  Boyce's  doctrine  of  original  sin  using  his  Abstract  of  Systematic  Theology.  Next,  his  doctrine  of  original  sin  will  be  analyzed  and  compared  to  the  eight  propositions  concerning  original  sin  using  his  systematic  theology  and  other  writings,  as  well  as  the  confessional  statement  adopted  by  Southern  Seminary,  the  Abstract  of  Principles.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  will  examine  Mullins'  understanding  of  original  sin  as  expressed  in  The  Christian  Religion  in  Its  Doctrinal  Expression.
■520    ▼aChapter  four  will  delineate  Moody's  doctrine  of  original  sin  using  his    The  Word  of  Truth.  Following  this,  it  will  evaluate  his  view  of  original  sin  in  light  of  the  eight  propositions  using  not  only  his  primary  writings,  but  also  The  Baptist  Faith  and  Message  of  1963  that  had  become  the  dominant  confession  in  Baptist  life  at  that  time.
