요약 : The African American preacher historically has been a seminal figure in the social and religious life of the African American community. Previous research has examined the relationship between his rhetoric and tangible social conventions of the African Americans. This project examined the relationship between his preaching and an intangible psychological concept, the notion of ethnic identity. The study posed and answered two questions: (1) In what ways did African American preaching shape black ethnic identity during the period 1890--1940? (2) What are the implications of these ways for the African American church of that era?

요약 : A six-part process was employed to resolve these questions, with each part corresponding directly to a chapter of the project. Chapter 1 discussed an inherent theoretical assumption of the study, namely, that the African American preacher affects the self-perception of African Americans. This influence is possible because of his unique sociological role within the group. The chapter provided a discussion of this role. Chapter 2 supplied further theoretical groundwork by detailing the concept of black ethnic identity as conceptualized by theorists in the social sciences. Vital in this chapter was the presentation of a schema-based model of ethnic identity by Richard Allen, Michael Dawson, and Ronald Brown. The model posits five constructs associated with black ethnic identity: black autonomy, positive stereotypical beliefs, negative stereotypical beliefs, closeness to black masses, and closeness to black elites.

요약 : Chapter 3 discussed the historical delimitation of the study, the period of 1890--1940. This time has been termed the "Separate but Equal Era," as it was characterized by legalized segregation and social discrimination against African Americans. Chapter 4 designated three African American ministers as representative preachers of the era. Elias C. Morris, William J. Walls, and Reverdy C. Ransom were influential leaders in major black denominations: the National Baptist Convention, USA. Inc., the African Methodist Episcopal Church Zion, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church, respectively.

요약 : Chapter 5 resolved the first, and primary, research question of the study by performing a content analysis on selected documents (sermons and addresses) by Morris, Walls, and Ransom.

요약 : The final chapter discussed the results of the analysis in light of the research questions. The results revealed the ethnic identity constructs of black autonomy and positive stereotypical beliefs to be evident in the documents. The positive stereotypical beliefs construct dominated the documents. This emphasis provides evidence of a psychological opposition to the social discrimination of the era.
