요약 : The main argument of this study is that Southern Baptist colleges and universities were not aggressively sectarian places of higher education in the nineteenth century. Previous studies were largely dismissive of the role of denominational colleges in the history of American higher education, but this is undeserved. Denominational colleges could often be innovative and progressive in their methods and subject matter. Nineteenth century Baptist colleges were unequivocally Christian in their orientation, but this does not necessarily mean that they were "sectarian," a pejorative term. They operated from a theistic worldview, but they did not endeavor to make Baptists out of their students. Their religious orientation did not necessitate an inferior educational endeavor.

요약 : This study examined a number of primary sources, including college catalogs, trustee minutes, and other materials to try to arrive at a comprehensive picture of what colleges in the South were like in the 19th century. A student diary, faculty lecture notes, correspondence, and other period pieces by Baptists were also used. Attention is also given to the relationship between state colleges and the Baptist colleges in this study. Generally speaking, state higher education and religiously-controlled higher education coexisted with strained relations between the two.
초록/해제
요약 : The study is arranged mostly in a chronological fashion, beginning with the early years of the 1800s. The study concludes the major part of its research in the 1880s, but there is some information on the 1890s. Southern Baptist colleges comprise the subject matter, and the states that receive attention included Kentucky, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee. Some major findings of the study are that Baptist colleges often viewed themselves as colleges of opportunity for Southern students, and they also provided much of the elementary and grammar schooling of the South.
