초록/해제
요약 : Research has begun to accumulate regarding attitudes toward psychotherapy held by people of color. The majority of this research has utilized help-seeking behavior as a criterion for whether or not a particular culture has a positive or negative view of psychotherapy. It has been shown that African Americans vary regarding their attitudes toward psychotherapy, yet, continue to underutilize psychological services. One of the reasons suggested for this underutilization is the use of religion as an alternative coping mechanism. This study explored whether religion is a deterrent from utilization of psychotherapy by African American Baptists and whether attitudes toward psychotherapy are dependent upon one's level of religiosity. Eighty African-American adults completed the survey which consisted of Allport and Ross' (1967) Religious Orientation scale, Fischer and Turner's (1970) Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale, a demographic scale which included questions regarding time identifying as a Baptist as well as time attending a Baptist church/es regularly and a question regarding perception of mental health practitioners. Contrary to expectations, it was found that African American Baptists do not tend to have negative attitudes toward psychotherapy; however, they do not find it necessary for themselves. Likewise, religious orientation was found to be a predictor in regards to African American Baptists attitudes towards psychotherapy, specifically, extrinsic orientation. It was found the more African American Baptists' endorsed being extrinsically oriented their necessity for psychotherapy, confidence in the mental health practitioner, and interpersonal openness apparently decreases.
