■520    ▼aThis  study  investigated  the  relationship  between  the  application  of  a  church  growth  model  and  the  numeric  increase  in  attendance.  The  specific  objectives  were:  (1)  to  determine  if  after  the  application  of  a  growth  model  the  church  increased  or  decreased  in  attendance,  (2)  to  determine  if  contextual  factors  contributed  to  the  numeric  increase  of  a  church,  and  (3)  to  identify  population  growth  areas  and  their  impact  on  the  growth  of  a  church.
■520    ▼aOver  the  past  40  years,  many  church  growth  proponents  have  supported  the  notion  that  the  application  of  a  church  growth  model  leads  to  an  increase  in  attendance.  Much  of  the  research  done  at  Fuller  Seminaries'  Institute  of  Church  Growth  in  Pasadena,  California,  seemed  to  support  this  notion.  Unfortunately,  there  had  been  no  follow-up  research  to  support  this  idea.
■520    ▼aData  were  collected  through  a  survey  sent  to  all  285  American  Baptist  churches  of  the  Pacific  Southwest  region.  The  survey  identified  issues  related  to  the  application  of  a  church  growth  model.  The  survey  was  followed  by  a  personal  interview  questionnaire  developed  by  the  researcher  that  identified  issues  regarding  contextual  items  and  church  growth.
■520    ▼aThe  results  from  this  study  indicated  that  the  application  of  a  growth  model  did  not  necessarily  contribute  to  the  numeric  increase  in  a  church's  attendance  rate.  Furthermore,  the  churches  that  did  not  apply  a  growth  model  experienced  approximately  the  same  amount  of  growth  over  a  20-year  period  as  the  churches  that  applied  a  growth  model.  Also,  there  was  no  direct  relationship  found  between  contextual  issues,  such  as  attendance  at  a  church  growth  seminar  along  with  evangelism  classes  being  taught,  and  the  growth  of  the  church.  Lastly,  the  results  indicated  no  relationship  between  the  population  growth  rate  of  an  area  and  the  growth  of  a  church.
■520    ▼aAn  analysis  of  the  findings  showed  no  clear  connection  between  the  application  of  a  growth  model  and  church  growth,  which  contradicts  the  message  of  proponents  of  the  church  growth  movement.  Analysis  also  showed  the  need  for  more  study  on  the  part  of  the  American  Baptist  denomination  especially  in  the  area  of  ethnic  minority  attendance  throughout  the  Pacific  Southwest  region.
