초록/해제
요약 : The genesis of The Criswell College in 1971 grew out of a concern by W. A. Criswell and others over the educational deficiencies regarding many of the Southern Baptist Convention's (SBC) pastors. In addition, the propensity toward liberalism in the convention's six seminaries further fueled concerns of the school's architects over the convention's educational environment. Their ultimate motivation in founding The Criswell College was to preserve and strengthen the SBC's emphasis on evangelism and missions.
초록/해제
요약 : The date of the college's birth placed it in a time just prior to tremendous changes that would sweep the SBC. In addition, the factors that brought about the school's existence were the same ones that gave birth to reforms within the convention. Though the battle was over theology, specifically inerrancy, the motivation for reformers was to save the praxis of evangelism and missions within the convention. During this time the school's leaders and students had an opportunity to make significant contributions to these reforms. The purpose of this study was to discover the effects of The Criswell College on the SBC, 1980--2000.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter of this research project introduces the reader to the study's significance and the writer's research methodology. The second chapter reviews the history and development of The Criswell College, specifically the contributions of James Bryant, W. A. Criswell, Leo Eddleman, and Paige Patterson. The third chapter presents a statistical analysis of the school's graduates. First, the writer presents a qualitative analysis utilizing an ethnographic approach. Second, the writer presents a quantitative analysis that compares churches pastored by the school's graduates to a random sampling of SBC churches. The quantitative analysis was descriptive in nature. The fourth chapter examined the college's effect on major institutions of the SBC including Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and Southern Baptists of Texas Convention. In addition, the writer reviewed the school's graduates returning to their alma mater to further influence the direction of the school. The fifth chapter presents the writers final analysis and conclusions. The results of this study suggest that The Criswell College had a positive and significant effect on the SBC. In addition, its pedagogical approach in maintaining a consonance between orthodoxy and orthopraxy serves as an effective historical and biblical model of education for schools and churches to follow.
