요약 : English baptismal fonts of the late eleventh and twelfth centuries show significant differences from the plain styles preferred in the pre-Conquest period and from the more formalized styles of the later medieval period. Romanesque English fonts show the period's particular interest in narrative decoration. This dissertation argues that the narrow range of narrative iconographies closely reflects the period's concern with the theological definition of baptism and its place within a system of sacramental theology.

요약 : In chapter one, I define the corpus of some thirty fonts that will be examined, as well as establishing the methodological approach to these images. In chapter two, I examine the period's theological movement which seeks to establish a definition of the sacraments which is systematic, delimiting the nature and number of sacraments, and salvific, seeking to direct spiritual life towards the afterlife, in focus. Here, I also consider the English parish system and its distinctive concerns about baptism; it raises and begins to answer the questions of diffusion of complicated theology into formalized visual representations. In chapter three, I address the iconography of incarnation, seen on these fonts as scenes from Adam and Eve's Temptation and Fall and Christ's Infancy, examining the messages of mortality with relation to the baptismal covenant and Christ's sacrifice. In chapter four, I investigate the iconography of Christ's baptism as a referent to the baptismal rite; I also consider the few examples of contemporary ritual depicted on these fonts. Chapter five considers allusions to other sacraments, visually linking the sacramental system, similar to the textual connections of contemporary theological writing.

요약 : Mainstream scholarly analysis has often treated these works of art as "minor," ignoring their considerable liturgical and cultural importance at the time. The published literature that does address these works is overwhelmingly weighted to formal analysis, cataloguing stylistic features alone. This dissertation applies semiotic theory and narratology to these critical liturgical pieces, finding that the images vividly and succinctly express contemporary theological debate.
