■520    ▼aProblem.  The  problem  of  this  study  was  to  determine  the  difference  between  ministers'  and  volunteer  leaders'  perceptions  of  what  constitutes  ministers'  leadership  competencies  in  the  areas  of  church  administration,  Christian  education,  and  pastoral  counseling  as  assessed  by  the  Pastoral  Abilities  Questionnaire.
■520    ▼aProcedures.  The  Pastoral  Abilities  Questionnaire    originally  developed  by  James  E.  Sweeney,  1979,  was  administered  to  a  systematic  sample  of  twelve  hundred  participants  of  four  groups---ministers,  deacons,  Sunday  School  teachers,  and  church  secretaries---three  hundred  in  each  group.  The  instrument  was  administered  in  a  national  workers'  conference  of  the  Nigerian  Baptist  Convention.  The  completed  questionnaires  were  mailed  to  the  researcher  in  the  United  States  by  the  main  coordinators.  The  means  of  the  scores  of  each  sample  on  each  competency  were  compared  using  the  one-way  analysis  of  variance  and  the  Scheffe  test  for  all  possible  comparisons  to  determine  if  a  significant  difference  existed  between  any  of  the  samples  on  any  competency.
■520    ▼aFindings  and  conclusions.  The  null  hypotheses  were  rejected  for  all  the  seventy  competencies.  There  were  some  items  where  the  sample  groups  differed  in  the  ways  they  perceived  some  competencies  as  the  Scheffe  test  for  multiple  comparisons  showed.  The  findings  were  interpreted  in  light  of  the  survey  of  literature  and  the  following  conclusions  were  drawn:  (1)  all  agree  that  all  the  competencies  are  vital  to  the  minister's  task;  and  (2)  ministers  differ  from  volunteer  leaders  in  their  perspectives  and  expectations  of  the  skills  needed  by  the  minister  of  a  local  church.  Sunday  School  teachers  and  church  secretaries  do  not  fully  understand  the  peculiar  nature  of  the  work  of  the  minister.
