요약 : The desegregation of denominationally-affiliated colleges and universities forced the white church-going people of South Carolina to confront changes brought about by the civil rights movement. Motivated by either a moral imperative and/or an understanding that continued segregation was financially impractical, select white administrators, trustees, alumni, church leaders, and church members accommodated desegregation in denominationally-affiliated colleges and universities over the course of the 1960's. At institutions that desegregated, or attempted to desegregate before the 1964 Civil Rights financially forced most institutions to do so, race became a measure of an institution's commitment to academic prominence. At institutions where desegregation prompted conflict between the college or university and the denomination with which it was affiliated, desegregation forced these colleges and universities to reevaluate their institutional identity. Other factors influenced the nature of desegregation at these institutions as well, such as financial stability, student activism and conservatism, African American agency, the organizational structure of the denominations, the power of individual personalities, and federal mandates. This history illustrates the convergence of religion, race, federal law, and higher education.
