초록/해제
요약 : Through a close, ethnographic study of four congregations of Baptists in the Philippine city of Baguio, I explore the processes by which individuals in religious community come to identify with a particular geographic, social and religious sense of community, constituting their "place." By exploring Protestantism in the Philippines, I am able to get at these larger, theoretical issues through a specific ethnographic example, providing the sort of local, regional and global dynamics that illustrate the issues at hand, while also touching on a relatively under-researched religious phenomenon. Moreover, I am able to expand upon the literature dealing with global-local dynamics, challenging dichotomous understandings of localization versus globalization, and imagined communities versus "real" communities, moving towards a stronger theory of the local.
초록/해제
요약 : Protestantism in the Philippines represents a wide-spread movement comprised of multiple, and often conflicting, ideologies and practices, providing a case of a non-local tradition with a historic presence and firm local control. By referring to these locally grounded communities that identify with a tradition formed outside the "local" boundaries of place, I demonstrate how the process of "localization" is not about the collision of a local and non-local system, but the redirecting of individual and corporate attention towards communities with which they seek to identify. The cases represent a form of controlled comparison in which congregations sharing a similar historical and theological framework are compared in light of the differences in social variables (such as ethnicity, class, and language), and the resulting discourses of place, location, community and identity. I argue that this is not only instructive for our understanding of Protestant Christianity generally, but speaks to the wider phenomena of place-making, localization and global communities characteristic of our contemporary social world.
