요약 : Problem. The problem of this study was to determine the relationship between critical thinking skills scores as measured by the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) and a specified set of predictor variables in students enrolled in selected Southern Baptist colleges. These variables are: age, class load, classification, hours employed, grade point average, high school average grades, and college residence.

요약 : Procedures. The academic deans of four Southern Baptist colleges were enlisted to participate in the research A total of 585 instrument sets (CCTST and demographic questionnaire) were sent to the deans. Selected faculty of each school administered the instruments to the students. The sample consisted of 379 students. Completed instruments were scored by computer and statistical analyses were executed to provide insight into the relationship of the seven predictor variables to the six criterion variable.

요약 : Findings and conclusions. Three variables repeatedly proved to be significant predictors (p = 0.05). The three significant predictor variables (student classification, student grade point average, and student place of residence) were present in five of the six regression models. Using a stepwise regression method, student classification appeared to be the most significant predictor of critical thinking skills, as well as the sub-scale skills of analysis, evaluation, inference, and inductive reasoning. The greatest gain in critical thinking occurred during the first year of college. This finding agrees with other research showing the freshman year is the time for the greatest gains in critical thinking skills. The resulting data shows that the academic programs of the selected schools produce more critically thinking students, that students with a higher grade point averages score higher in critical thinking skills, and that students in on-campus housing score higher in critical thinking skills testing than their off-campus counterparts.
