요약 : Since its inception in the 1930's, the Memorial Baptist Church of Murray, Kentucky, had a history of shallowness in the practice and profession of the Christian life. Over the years, members had become accustomed to a style of casual Christianity. This resulted in lax attitudes toward church discipline, an inability to resolve conflict among members, an inability to discern spiritual warfare, an acceptance of questionable personal conduct among certain members, as well as a general disinterest in God's call to His children to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29).

요약 : By the year 2001, a significant number of church members felt led by God to seek change. They knew something of the church's history, and shared with their pastor the conviction that the time had come to have a church wide call to discipleship. The end result of their concern, and their challenge to him as leader, was the development and implementation of a ten-week discipleship program.

요약 : Through a series of personal contacts, invitations from the pulpit, and a church-wide mailing, the pastor sought to enlist concerned church members. The response was encouraging, as a total of twenty-six persons (ten percent) of the active church membership responded to the call Twenty-four of those persons remained active in the program over a ten-week period.

요약 : Seeking an effective model for a discipleship program, the pastor turned to the Navigators and the discipleship program of Leroy Eims, The Lost Art of Disciplemaking. His original plan called for the pastor to work with one member, covering 30 topics in 30 weeks. Given the need to involve a large number of interested church members, and the need to retain a high level of involvement, the program was adjusted to twelve key topics, introduced over a ten-week period. These included: assurance of salvation, Satan and spiritual warfare, the Holy Spirit, church life, the Lordship of Christ, personal stewardship, daily quiet time, prayer and fasting, personal testimony, learning and memorizing the Word, Christian service, and Christian world view.

요약 : To measure participants' levels of skill and knowledge in each of the above areas, a pre-survey was given during session one of the program. The same survey was repeated during week ten of the program, to show areas of spiritual growth. During the third week of the program, a spiritual gifts inventory was administered. This tool enabled group members to discern areas in their lives where the Holy Spirit had gifted them for service. The end result of the ten week program was an increased awareness by participants of several key areas of the Christian life. They learned the need for a regular, personal program of scripture memory and Bible study. They practiced a daily time of prayer and considered the importance of fasting. In addition, the ten week program was overshadowed by an awareness of the need for the daily empowerment of the Holy Spirit, as the One who guides and grows the believer as a disciple of Jesus Christ. r
