■520    ▼aThis  study  begins  with  an  examination  of  elder  rule  in  three  areas.  The  author  commences  with  a  discussion  of  elders  in  the  New  Testament  and  continues  to  a  consideration  of  the  subject  from  the  perspective  of  the  polity  practiced  by  Southern  Baptists  since  their  beginning  in  1845.  Next,  this  dissertation  examines  the  influence  of  elder  leadership  from  such  origins  as  Calvinism,  the  Reformed  tradition,  and  Presbyterian  ecclesiology.  The  result  of  this  groundwork  is  to  examine  five  representative  churches  that  have  moved  away  from  the  two-officer  model  of  pastors  and  deacons  to  a  church  governance  style  that  is  an  acceptance  of  the  three-officer  paradigm  of  pastor/teaching  elder,  elders,  and  deacons.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  examines  the  issue  of  the  form,  the  function,  and  the  authority  of  church  leadership  from  three  perspectives:  (1)  the  biblical  terminology  and  pattern  of  the  first-century  New  Testament  church;  (2)  the  New  Hampshire  Confession  and  the  Baptist  Faith  and  Message  Statements  of  1925,  1963,  and  2000  with  conclusions  being  drawn  from  the  general  consensus  of  these  documents;  and  (3)  the  example  of  Baptist  history  in  general,  and  Southern  Baptist  churches  in  particular,  with  a  presentation  of  the  representative  views  of  leaders  since  the  beginning  of  the  Southern  Baptist  Convention  in  1845.
■520    ▼aThe  study  offers  some  definitions  of  elder  rule.  Also,  several  influential  evangelical  leaders  of  other  faiths  are  examined  since  they  have  been  viewed  by  some  as  influencing  Southern  Baptists  to  adopt  the  three-officer  model  of  church  leadership.  Reasons  both  for  and  against  the  adoption  of  elder  rule  are  given,  as  well  as  concluding  remarks  which  will  give  an  evaluation  of  the  issues  involved  in  moving  from  the  two-officer  polity  to  a  three-officer  model.  The  results  of  this  study  will  provide  the  reader  with  information  he  can  use  that  will  help  him  make  an  informed  decision  about  which  model  of  church  governance  he  should  choose  as  a  contemporary  polity  model  for  a  Southern  Baptist  church.
