요약 : The inability of separated churches to celebrate the eucharist together has for centuries marked the disunity of the Church. During the twentieth century the increasing mutual recognition by the churches of one another as true members of the one Body brought to the fore the question of what role eucharistic sharing ought to play in the movement to reunion. Is the eucharist the culmination of the process of reunion, or can it be a source of the unity we seek?

요약 : This dissertation explores the question of the role of eucharistic sharing in the movement to reunion from the perspective of the Church of England within the Anglican Communion. The first section examines the period between 1920 and 1948, when the Church of England generally restricted communion in its churches to Anglicans, and discouraged its members from participating in communion in the eucharistic celebrations of other churches. The second section looks at the period beginning in 1948 and culminating in 1968, which witnessed a shift in Anglican policy regarding eucharistic sharing among separated Churches; from insisting upon communion as the culmination of the movement to reunion, the Anglican Church moved to encouraging intercommunion as a step on the way to the reunion of the churches. The final section covers the last three decades of the twentieth century, and focuses upon the implementation of this new policy, with respect to relationships with particular churches, in dialogue, and in agreements which inaugurate a relationship in which intercommunion serves as a means to furthering an already existing, but incomplete unity.

요약 : The final chapter offers a synthesis of the elements which together contributed to the shift in the policy and practice of the Church of England. The realization of the ecclesial implications of baptism and eucharist, a re-thinking of the nature of apostolicity, and a developing sense of the eschatological nature of both the Church and the eucharist permitted the change in thinking about the role of intercommunion in the movement to reunion. Within an ecclesiology of communion, these elements come together, making eucharistic sharing among churches committed to unity not only possible but desirable.
