요약 : The present study integrates aspects of all the major scholarship trends in Gospel music including the historical, biographical, theoretical, and the performative. The decided focus on women in Gospel music, with attention to Gospel music as a female-centered genre, differentiates the present work from earlier scholarship. More specifically, I argue Gospel music as women's alternative to traditional male-centered pulpit ministry. By female-centered, I suggest that this genre historically reveals more female participants than male. I also suggest a multi-dimensional and transformative power, that Gospel women demonstrate through their alternative ministry.

요약 : The feminist principles I apply draw from the work of Hazel V. Carby, and are complemented by the work of Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Karen Baker-Fletcher, Cheryl Gilkes and others. Carby's work on black women's narratives and spirituality in the 19th-century provides a precedent for the examination of narrative and spirituality in the lives of the women relevant to this study.

요약 : The methodological precedent set forth in this study is the natural result of its interdisciplinary subject matter. Significant are religion, the black church, and black culture generally, as well as narrative and literature, and broader cultural studies related to women. Finally, a vital component of the present work is its use of oral history. The voices of women ministers, Gospel music figures, the wives of ministers, as well as other women in the church, contribute to this examination. My primary subject, however, is Lucie Eddie Campbell (1885--1963), Music Director of the National Baptist Convention, Inc. USA, whom I examine as representative of the proposed theoretical tenets and alternative ministerial service, but also as an important voice for women and black music with her pioneering efforts in Gospel. I examine the various dimensions of her music including performance space, the types of songs she composed or arranged, for whom they were composed, how they were inspired, how they were received and, finally, stylistic features and the implications for the ministerial function they performed.
