요약 : Gerhard Westerburg, Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt's brother-in-law, was an important secondary figure of the Reformation. As a disciple of the Zwickau Prophets he was present during the tumultuous Wittenberg Movement of 1521--1522. While in that city he met with Martin Luther on several occasions. Westerburg followed Karlstadt to Orlamunde in 1523 and produced two pamphlets on purgatory. Late in 1524, on assignment for his brother-in-law, he met with the Zurich radicals, Conrad Grebel and Felix Mantz, shortly before they instituted believers baptism in January of 1525.
초록/해제
요약 : In the spring of 1525, Frankfurt am Main was on the precipice of an urban revolt during the Peasants' War when Westerburg orchestrated and authored articles that averted war. In 1534 he received believers' baptism in Munster just prior to the inauguration of the infamous Anabaptist Kingdom, then returned to Cologne and founded an Anabaptist community.
초록/해제
요약 : After starting an Anabaptist congregation in 1534, he visited with Martin Bucer and Wolfgang Capito in Strassburg. Between 1534 and 1542 he left Anabaptism and joined the Reformed Church. In 1545, he released four works with the purpose of bringing the Reformation to Cologne. Archbishop Hermann von Wied had already invited Bucer to help in the effort. Westerburg's last days were spent as a pastor in the Reformed church in East Friesland.
초록/해제
요약 : In many ways, Westerburg's life is a theological microcosm of the Reformation. His spiritual journey---from a Catholic to a Protestant to an Anabaptist to a Reformed---mirrors both the erratic course of the Reformation and the resulting religious fragmentation of Europe during the sixteenth century. Despite Westerburg's ubiquitous presence and intriguing biography, he has received little attention from Reformation scholars.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation will attempt to show that Westerburg was a popularizer of ideas rather than an original thinker. The citizens of Cologne motivated Westerburg to write to combat error and to defend the truth, but he did this with the theological ideas of his time. His primary contribution to the Reformation was to support Archbishop Hermann von Wied in the effort to adopt the Reformation in Cologne.
